Union Berlin MediorNet strengthens the Union

Connecting and streamlining the entire broadcast system workflow in the stadium of Berlin’s unique football club.

Union Berlin The Challenge

Alte Försterei is the largest, single-purpose football stadium in Germany's capital and rightly required a solution that would ensure seamless connectivity and integration to manage the day-to-day runnings of a venue of this size for many activities including press conferences, controlling the venue's TV screens, live action replays and many of the other features required of any large stadium in the digital age.

Union Berlin Multi-Use

Along with the new building, substantial AV systems were specified to support the broadcasting of games and to bring added functionality to multi-use rooms around the stadium. This would not only nurture and potentially grow the club’s fan base by enabling effective capture and distribution of live video, but ensure the club’s financial future by creating a series of multi-purpose areas (from the meeting rooms to the pitch area itself) that could be hired out for a range of uses from meetings to concerts.

Union Berlin Communication Solution

The six important points of communication within the venue - house management, stadium management, media and press centre, press conference room, OB truck accommodation, and stadium PA – are all are connected via Riedel’s RockNet and MediorNet systems. Riedel also supplied 130 Motorola handheld radios, providing further secure and high-end digital audio quality that was fully integrated through the MediorNet backbone and also into the fire evacuation system. This provided 15KM of coverage area so staff can use them to direct traffic outside the stadium and still easily be in range.

» We are a second league team delivering a first league experience through the quality of our facilities and match coverage. Riedel’s setup is an example of how simple and reliable systems can truly be, given the right combination of digital infrastructure and efficient engineering. Tying together a complex set-up over a single fibre backbone to deliver simple and reliable connectivity – this is Riedel. «

Union Berlin 10 Events at a time

From the point of view of integration and workflow, the key, beyond security and reliability, is the homogenisation of both control and communication across all areas, but also the fact that the simplicity of the system enables quick switching between points; be they the lights in the disabled toilets, providing journalists with up-to-date information and video in the conference room, or streaming live video pitch-side and to the stadium’s enviable VIP rooms. The stadium now has the capacity to run up 10 events at the same time. The AV system was created for football but it has unlocked big business opportunities. Nearly every week there are events hosted including big concerts like rock band Linkin Park.
