Alpine Ski World Championships 2007 in Are to Use Digital Trunked Radio (TETRA) Technology

The organization committee of the Alpine Ski World Championship 2007 in Are, Sweden has selected TETRA – digital trunked radio technology – as the basis of all its general radio services. This technology, which has also been used at the Olympic Winter Games 2006 in Torino, includes several advantages such as full-duplex communication, excellent audio quality, maximum security, flexible net and connection management as well as optimal frequency usage. Only the radio channel for the judges will continue to use conventional analogue radio.

The digital radio services will be made possible by FIS in partnership with Riedel Communications and Tele Comm Sportservice. As a newly formed working group, they will install and operate the radio network, the control centre, the sub control centres and the communication connections to the outside locations.

The new FIS partners have comprehensive experience in the execution of international large-scale events in general and winter sports events in particular. Tele Comm Sportservice has been providing radio services for race tracks and for judges at Ski World Cup races, Ski World Championships and Olympic Games for years. Riedel provided the entire complement of radio equipment as well as the venue intercom for TOROC – the organisation committee of the Olympic Winter Games in Torino. In addition, Riedel furnished the entire radio traffic system for the Hostbroadcaster Torino Olympic Broadcasting (TOBO) and guaranteed the perfect operational sequence of the opening and closing ceremonies with its Artist digital intercom systems.

Beyond the digital radio installation at Are FIS plans to connect the TETRA solution to a wired intercom system as well as to integrate the analogue judge channel in the system. Riedel and Tele Comm Sportservice will use the highest quality equipment, comprised of market leader Motorola’s radios and Riedel’s Artist digital intercom systems for the communication infrastructure.

National ski teams with questions regarding radio frequencies, programming, radio rentals or services are kindly asked to contact Tele Comm Sportservice directly.
